Hello to one and all, glad tidings and good news I bring about your favourite time of year. Yes that’s right folks, it’s the SheffSki Easter Holiday, back once again for more fun and frivolity!!! This year we will be heading out to the world class ski resort of CHAMONIX. If you’re looking for a quick explanation of what goes on a SheffSki holiday then look no further than the video below.
So what does Chamonix have to offer skiing wise?
Well, as you can see from the piste map below, there’s over 150 km of piste around Chamonix itself, but it is also linked to the large Mont-Blanc ski area, which holds numerous ski resorts, with 12 in the Chamonix Valley alone. The pisted runs to pick from offer every level of skier something to get their teeth into it, so even if you’re just beginning to find your snow legs don’t be afraid SheffSki and Chamonix will take great care of you. Of course if the weather permits then the off-piste skiing is fudging fantastic with lots of tree runs and cliff drops scattered across the mountain. I’m going to have to stop typing here because I’m getting cravings for snow (hence the snow forecast lower down the page) after writing this bit so lets move on…
What’s the deal with hardware?
Well you can bring your own gear with you, or you can rent out skis and boots for the week if you need to. There are three levels of ski hire Bronze, Silver and Gold. These levels relate to the level of skiing that you’re at, so if you’re a complete novice we recommend that you get the Bronze ski hire, because this will be set up to make skiing easy and enjoyable. But, if you want to push yourself and start off-piste skiing then we wouldn’t recommend using the Bronze hire.

Can I have lessons?
Of course you can, and we highly recommend that you book lessons if you’re a complete novice because the guys at ESF (Ecole du Ski Francais) will make skiing fun and enjoyable for you without getting you into a dangerous situation. If you do get lessons then you are usually placed in a group of about 8 people of the same ability and get taught together, doing this as opposed to hacking down the mountain and falling every 5m usually makes the week way more fun. Here’s a helpful video if you’re undecided…
So what’s the Chamonix night life like?
Chamonix has lots of bars, cafés and nights clubs and the best apres ski in the Alps with plenty of live music. Almost as famous as its mountains, the nightlife of Chamonix will lure you out for some unforgettable, yet hazy, nights.
Does SheffSki have holiday socials?
Yeah boy! We usually have 2 fancy dress nights for the creative among you (themes to be confirmed, but any suggestions you have are welcome) just to prove exactly how awesome we are. On top of that we have the mountain meal to look forward to, this is a must do, as the name suggests its a proper sit down meal, usually a fondue accompanied by a few bottles of wine (often too many) followed by a good old ho-down as the lights dim and the DJ starts up the tunes. And then we have our crowning glory, the valley ralley, an event where creativity and amazing retro gear are put before skiing performance, I can’t really go into more detail on here about valley ralley because we might get in trouble, but just ask any committee member or old hand about valley ralley and I’m sure you’ll hear a few good yarns.
What’s the accommodation like?
We are staying in the wonderful Chamonix Sud. With an average rating of 3.5 on TripAdvisor, this place is perfect for SheffSki antics. Here is some that you will all want to know:
- 2 minutes’ walk to the ski bus stop
- 10 minutes’ walk to the centre of Chamonix
- 4 minute walk to Aiguille du Midi cable car
- Local shops and restaurants nearby at Chamonix Sud (including bakery and supermarket)
- All apartments have a kitchenette with two hot plates, fridge, mini-oven, bathroom and WC
How do we get there?
By coach and ferry of course, but don’t for a second think that this means hours of monotonous boredom, far from it in fact we use the coach journey as warm up for the week ahead as well as whipping out some classic DVD’s for our viewing pleasure. And then on the ferry you may wish to partake in port to port if you’re feeling adventurous. And if you’re worried about taking your own gear with you on the coach don’t be, we get a ski trailer to make sure you precious planks arrive safe and sound.
The coaches will stop for breakfast, and at a supermarket along the way so you can stock up on cheap food to fuel you through the week of skiing.
Pickup and drop off points will be confirmed in the next few weeks.
